Related to the more familiar livebearers, killifishes include remarkable species that have solved the problems of desert living by spending periods of drought as dormant eggs. With this ‘live fast - die young’ strategy, these types (known as Annual killies) are often spectacularly colourful to attract females when time for long courtships doesn’t exist. Other forms inhabit less seasonal habitats and employ more conventional breeding techniques, although males are also dressed in fine courtship colours.
