Members of the carp family dominate this group of hardy fishes, that include domesticated forms of native species such as Tench (Tinca tinca) and Rudd (Scardinius erythropthalmus) as well as the more exotic Goldfish varieties (Carassius auratus) and perhaps the ultimate pet fish - Koi carp (Cyprinus rubrofuscus).
All of the koi varieties are large, messy fish that are at their best in big ponds with big filters and they have this in common with the real oddballs such as Sterlet and Sturgeon (Acipenser sp.) which are tireless swimmers reminiscent of sharks in their cruising.
