One of the most important groups for fish keepers, this family includes the familiar Neon tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) and the notorious Red-bellied Piranha (Pygocentrus nattereri). With few exceptions, most tetras are shoaling community fish which can vary in their size and suitability. Small, colourful types are excellent community choices, whereas the deeper-bodied types can be more nippy and suit aquaria housing tank mates that would eat their smaller relatives.
