Zoe Ratchford Royston
How long have you been a Maidenhead Aquatics team member?
I have been with Maidenhead Aquatics 6 years but I’ve been in the aquatics industry for 12 years
How long have you been keeping fish?
23 years
What species do you most enjoy keeping and why?
I love Blennies. They just sit and watch you with their beady little eyes on their little Perch of choice. They always make me smile.
What pearl of wisdom would you give to first-time Fishkeepers?
When buying a tank, always go as big as you can go but within your budget. You will regret not buying a bigger tank in several months.
What would be your dream aquarium?
I would absolutely love a 10000L koi pond with a viewing window in my garden.
What’s your favourite aspect of work at Maidenhead Aquatics?
The customers. I love to get to know all my regulars!
What’s your secret fishkeeping “top tip”?
Look after your water and the fish will look after themselves. Test your water once a week to spot any abnormalities and then you can fix them quickly. Keep an eye on the KH of your water – especially in soft water areas like Leeds – as this can affect the pH.
How many aquariums do you currently keep at home, and what are these?
60L Fluval Spec marine with a pair of common clownfish, a goldstreak blenny, a royal gramma, a fire shrimp and a few soft corals
What’s the most unique species you’ve ever cared for at Maidenhead Aquatics?
Definitely the Cross River Puffer fish we had at our Tong store!
What is it that first got you hooked on fishkeeping?
My dad. I’ve always had a love for creatures under the sea and my dad kept fish before I came along. He introduced me when I was little and I loved to help feed and water change the tank. I love fish that much it inspired me to do a degree in Marine and Freshwater Biology and take up a career with Maidenhead Aquatics.
