Here at Maidenhead Aquatics, we believe in the power of sustainability and the importance of conservation. This is why we are pleased with our involvement in the LINI project, an initiative dedicated to protecting and restoring ecosystems.
What is LINI?
Founded in 2008, LINI (which translates to 'line' or 'connection' in Indonesian) is a dedicated non-profit organisation committed to promoting sustainable community development in Indonesia. With a passionate team of professionals at its helm, LINI stands out as one of the few organisations focused on community-based marine conservation, specifically aimed at fostering sustainable fisheries.
LINI's Mission
LINI is dedicated to developing sustainable solutions for Indonesia's marine resources by integrating science, education and the empowerment of coastal communities, the organisation is making significant progress in preserving the country's diverse marine biodiversity. Their vision is to create a future where marine ecosystems are appreciated as vital global resources, and where Indonesia's coastal communities actively protect their environment while improving their quality of life.
Our involvement
LINI community-based reef restoration programme in Bali addresses the urgent issue of coral reef depletion, a problem worsened by historical coral harvesting, damaging fishing practices and environmental pollution. Bali's unique location and rich marine biodiversity have faced significant challenges, particularly along its northern, eastern and southern coasts. Since 2010, LINI has collaborated with local communities to launch reef restoration initiatives, starting in Les Villages and Penuktukan Village in North Bali. The main objective of this programme is to revitalise fish habits and populations, providing alternative fishing locations to reduce pressure on natural reefs.
At Maidenhead Aquatics, we are deeply committed to preserving marine ecosystems, which is why we have partnered with LINI to support the Reef Restoration project. This initiative in North Bali brings together various stakeholders, including fishers, marine ornamental exporters and tourism operators, all of whom stand to benefit from the revival of healthy reefs and thriving fish populations. Additionally, the project offers alternative income opportunities for fishers by enabling them to create and deploy artificial substrates, construct coral tables and prepare coral plugs.
To enhance the coral restoration efforts at Les Village, we will support the creation of artificial reefs. These new habitats will span an area of 11 by 5.5 metres and will consist of 91 individual structures. Designed with hard surfaces, these structures will facilitate the natural settlement and growth of new coral, while the hollow 'fish domes' will provide refuge for a variety of marine fish. Both types of structures are built to endure for many years, allowing sufficient time for the natural reed to recover and once again serve as a sanctuary for diverse marine life.
Members of our teams and Senior management frequently visit the Indonesian communities supported by the foundation. We are dedicated to raising awareness and promoting visibility for the cause, aiming to educate locals and provide sustainable livelihoods while actively contributing to the preservation of marine habitats.
