Airing at 8pm on the 15th October 2019 on ITV1, Alan and his team of horticultural helpers went to Swindon to surprise Lorraine, a retired RAF servicewoman and devoted charity volunteer who is dedicating her life to supporting ex-service veterans. Because of a spinal injury, Lorraine struggles with mobility issues and lives with her full-time support team - Leonbergers Poppy and Doris. Poppy is a retired therapy dog and Doris is Lorraine's assistance dog and helps with chores such as laundry and fetching household items.

In spite of a mix of sunshine and showers during the project, the team transformed her gravel covered back garden into a fabulous dog-friendly, low-maintenance space - creating a calming retreat for both Lorraine and her canine family to enjoy.

The 12 x 7m plot was split into 4 sections. In one section the team built a long thin water trough that is to be used as a ‘posh paddling pool’ by the dogs and in another they created a beautiful running water feature that forms the centre piece of a poppy-planted war memorial and offers the sight and sound of gently flowing water to relax and calm her mind.

Love your Garden - Spherical Water feature

The water rill that has become the ‘doggy paddling pool’ was lined with dark grey tiles so that when the dogs aren’t splashing around in it, and the water is still, it is super-reflective of the sky offering a stunning visual feature to the garden for Lorraine to enjoy.

To ensure that the water remains clean and clear, and doesn’t become full of dog hairs and debris the team installed an Oase pump that not only will remove the dog hair easily and keep the pool clean without lots of manual effort by Lorraine, but the water in the pool can be recycled by switching the settings and be used to water the mass of plants that the team added to the garden.

In addition to the designer ‘doggy paddling pool’ the team installed a stunning white spherical running water feature with a light contained at its core, as a centrepiece to a memorial area surrounded by poppies in recognition of those who have been lost over the years.

The episode showcased two great ways of introducing water features into a low maintenance garden. So if you missed out, you can see the episode again on https://www.itv.com/hub/love-your-garden/2a1173 .
