A pretty little pond plant, Cotula has a creeping habit; produces masses of golden yellow flowers. Height 15-30 cm. Plant in full or part sun. Plant in zone 1 or 2. Flowering time: summer. Grow in the shallow pond margins where the plant will form a raft of foliage out on the water. Rafting plants provide cover for fish and habitat for many pond creatures. Cotula seeds freely or propagate from cuttings. Foliage is aromatic when crushed; the scent is similar to lemon verbena.

Marginal pond plants grow in rivers, streams and ponds in the wild. They are very versatile growing in damp soil to shallow water. They are usually planted on the shelves of ornamental ponds and offer height, colour and structure to the pond. When planting an ornamental pond/water feature, choose plants for their aesthetic value, however if you are planting a wildlife pond consider native plants.

Always use aquatic soil and baskets when planting marginals.

Planting instructions

Please note that these are plug plants which will require potting into suitable conditions as soon and they arrive.

Take a suitable fine-mesh basket, half-fill with aquatic soil. Place plant in centre of basket. Be careful not to damage the roots of the plant when placing. Fill remainder of basket with soil. Lightly firm soil around crown of the plant to within 2.5cm of top of the basket. Gently apply a layer of washed horticultural gravel. Submerge the re-potted plant in the pond to allow absorption of water and discourage any seepage.
