Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides "variegata" is a pretty perennial with fleshy scalloped-edged leaves that are green with a cream-white border. When mature, the cream-white borders become tinged with pink and the stems turn burgundy. This species is an excellent oxygenator but does grow fairly quickly and must be kept in check, especially in smaller ponds. The long, creeping shoots will soon form dense mats of leaves over the water's surface, and underwater, the mass of stems provide a welcome sanctuary for all sorts of aquatic life. During April to May, short flowering stalks may develop from the horizontal stems, terminating in an umbel of tiny, whitish cup-shaped flowers. Due to its attractive trailing nature, this plant is often grown near waterfalls and even in boggy container gardens. Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides variegata' s, fortunately, much slower growing than the invasive H. ranunculoides. Ideally it should be planted in an area of the pond that receives full sun or partial shade. When pruning this plant back, always dispose of the cuttings very carefully, never allowing it to enter our native waterways. Propagates easily, through seed or creeping stems.
