Potamogeton natans is a native rhizomatous perennial that is widespread throughout the British Isles. The oval floating leaves are up to 10cm long, dark green and leathery, with translucent, longitudinal veins; whereas the submerged foliage is grass-like in appearance, the "grasses actually being modified leaf stalks known as phyllodes. During May to September, dense spikes of small yellow-green flowers are produced above the water's surface, and these are followed by tiny fruits. Plant up into baskets containing aquatic soil with a top layer of pea gravel to stop the planting medium from clouding the water. To begin with, place no deeper than 30cm (12") in the pond, in an area that receives a good amount of sunlight. As the plant becomes established, it can be moved further into the pond, up to a maximum depth of 1.5m (4ft 11"). This plant is generally low-maintenance, but it is a fast grower and may require periodic thinning out. It is an ideal oxygenator for large, deep ponds. Propagation is by seed, or division of the rhizomes during the spring.
