Pilularia globulifera is an unusual tiny, creeping fern that is native to the British Isles. The thin grass-like leaves, resembling green hair, arise from long, slender creeping rhizomes. Fresh, young leaves are curled at the tips, straightening out as they become established. This plant is found at a number of sites across Britain but is sometimes hard to spot as it often grows side by side with small rushes and water grasses at the edges of ponds; however, it is classed as internationally threatened due to the fact it is declining across the whole of its European range, so growing this plant in your garden will help conservation efforts. The common name Pillwort derives from the hard pill-like sporocarps at the bases of the stems. This is an ideal low-maintenance plant for bog gardens and for the margins of ponds. Plant in wet, fertile soil in a sheltered, sunny position - ideally at the water's edge, where conditions will remain moist. Typical spread is 25-30cm (10-12") within a couple of years. This species is able to propagate by spores, or vegetatively by the fragmentation of the branching rhizomes.
