Isolepis cernua is an eye-catching member of the sedge family, and is ideal for growing in bog gardens or around the shallow margins of ponds. It should be planted in a sunny or partially shaded position, where the roots are not allowed to dry out between waterings. This clump former should be placed with water no deeper than 5cm (2") over the top of the soil "never completely submerge it. The slender, bright green cylindrical stems are held in a mop-like formation, and during the summer, small cone-shaped flowers develop on the ends of these leaves, starting out a silvery white colour, and gradually turning beige-brown. These flowers give the plant the appearance of being made from fibre-optic threads, hence one of the common names. Typical spread of I. cernua is around 25cm (10") after 5 years. If the leaves turn yellow or brown, this usually means the roots have been allowed to dry out at some point; reposition in a wetter area, and it should pick up again fairly quickly. Light pruning may be carried out during the autumn if the plant is looking a little straggly, but do not cut back harshly. Propagation is from seed or division of the clumps. This plant readily self-seeds, and division is best carried out during the spring.
