Hydrocotyle novae-zelandiae is a robust perennial with green, fleshy scalloped-edged leaves. This species is an excellent oxygenator but does grow fairly quickly and must be kept in check, especially in smaller ponds. The long, creeping stems will soon form dense mats of leaves over the water's surface. Occasionally during late summer, short flowering stalks will develop from the horizontal stems, terminating in an umbel of tiny, greenish-white or greenish-yellow flowers. It is, however, much slower growing than the invasive Hydrocotyle ranunculoides. When pruning this plant back, always dispose of the cuttings very carefully "never allowing it to enter our native waterways. Propagates easily, through seed or creeping stems.
