Hippuris vulgaris is a hardy, native perennial that can either be grown as a marginal plant around the edges of the pond, or submerged as an oxygenator. This attractive plant produces two types of leaves, depending on whether they are submerged or emersed; the underwater leaves being much longer and softer than those on the stiff stems that rise above the water's surface, which resemble narrow green bottle-brushes. Plant either at the margin of the pond directly into rich soil, or plant up into baskets containing aquatic soil with a top layer of pea gravel to stop the planting medium from clouding the water. Place no deeper than 30cm (12") in the pond, in an area that receives a good amount of sunlight, as it will not do well in shady locations. It is, however, tolerant of moderate current. These plants have a spreading root system, and if not confined to baskets, will require periodic maintenance to keep their vigorous growth under control. The spreading habit and fine leaves ensure a plentiful environment for fry and other small aquatic life. Tiny white flowers may sometimes appear on the emersed stems between June and August. Propagation is by division in the spring, and the divisions can be planted directly into their permanent positions.
