Eleocharis acicularis is an attractive native perennial grass-like plant which is an excellent oxygenator that adapts to both shallow and moderately deep water (up to 45cm/18" in depth). This hardy plant forms dense clumps of bright green tufts, and if allowed to grow out of the water, it will produce tiny brown flowers on the top of each leaf from May to June. It is ideal for natural ponds to help prevent soil erosion at the edges, and for all other ponds, plant in baskets for ease of maintenance - it will provide welcome cover for amphibians, fry, and other aquatic life; in deeper areas it is a good spawning medium for fish. E. acicularis grows on a branching, creeping rhizome that produces needle-like leaves every few inches, eventually forming dense mats; however, it seldom gets out of hand, and is very easy to control by cutting the wandering stems in the spring before the next growing season begins. Propagation is through division of the running rhizomes.
