Ceratophyllum demersum is an excellent, submerged oxygenating plant for the pond. Its hardy, fast-growing nature ensures that the stiff whorls of thin tufty leaves quickly form a forest of foliage that not only helps lower nitrate (which consequently reduces algae) but it is also provides an ideal hiding place for fry and other tiny aquatic life. There is no need to plant this species in a container " simply place it in the pond, where it will float and grow. In favourable conditions, this plant may grow a little too fast, so be sure to harvest it regularly to prevent it from taking over the pond and shading out other plants. From June to September, this plant will produce tiny (2mm) white-green flowers in the leaf axils. During the winter, the plants tend to die back, but the modified stem buds that overwinter at the bottom of the pond will ensure re-growth during the spring. Interestingly, C. demersum is thought to have some allelopathic qualities, which reduces the growth of Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). Propagation is straightforward from cuttings.
