Common Waterweed

Egeria densa, formerly known as Elodea densa and often referred to as simply "Elodea", is an excellent hardy coolwater plant for beginners. It will grow both anchored in the substrate and floating on the water's surface, under a wide variety of conditions. Its rapid growth rate assists in creating a balance in the aquarium, helping to prevent algae blooms because of the amount of nutrients it absorbs. The speed of growth will naturally depend on the amount of light and nutrition available to the plant, but even in slightly unfavourable conditions, growth merely slows down and seldom actually stops. Wherever possible, use a nutrient-rich substrate and good lighting if you wish growth to be fast. E. densa is a fairly brittle plant and is prone to being snapped; however, these broken stems can be planted into the substrate where they will develop into new plants. Because of its ease of cultivation and speed of growth, E. densa has long been utilised in outdoor ponds for its efficient oxygenating capabilities. Over the summer it will often produce its distinctive 3-petalled white flowers at the surface. The only downside with this plant is that it does not appreciate high temperatures. Propagation is by cuttings.
