Description
Care
The beautiful Purple Tilefish is an active, skittish species that requires specific conditions in which to thrive. The aquarium must be exceptionally spacious with ample rocky cover, and a large open area with an appropriate depth of sand bed which the nervous Tilefish can dive into if feeling threatened. Of extreme importance is the need for tight fitting coverslides "“ these fish can and will jump at lightning speed. Do also ensure there are no gaps around the top of the tank where equipment cables etc feed into the aquarium. Lighting should be subdued to minimise stress on your Tilefish. Powerful filtration, water movement, and oxygenation are a must. These fish can be kept in groups, if introduced simultaneously as juveniles. Any tankmates should be of similar size and temperament. Purple Tilefish should not harm corals, although the dim lighting will only be advantageous to deepwater organisms. Small shrimp and other crustaceans will definitely be at risk.
Feeding
This species has a fast metabolism and requires feeding in small amounts several times per day. Offer a variety of meaty foodstuffs such as Mysis shrimp, vitamin-enriched brineshrimp, krill, chopped cockle/mussel/clam meat/crab meat/fish etc.
Breeding
The Purple Tilefish has not been bred in the home aquarium.
