The Polypterus or Bichirs are an ancient group of fishes that appeared around 100 million years ago and look suitably primitive.
Typically bottom-dwelling, these are fish built to inhabit a complex, swampy environment and have the ability to breathe air in order to exploit low oxygen environments. With their fleshy fins and armoured bodies, these tough animals are hardy, but prefer a peaceful aquarium with plenty of hiding places.
Not given to aggression, bichirs are predatory but will generally ignore tankmates too large to swallow whole. Keep their aquarium well covered to prevent escape attempts, especially if keeping the eel-like Reedfish.
