Snails have been popular additions to aquaria for decades, mostly to help control algae but also for their looks and interest.
Zebra nerites are great algae eaters which are unable to breed in aquaria (which means they won’t become a nuisance) whilst Assassin snails are hunters which live in the substrate and consume other snails – making them an excellent means of controlling any unwelcome species.
Apple snails returned after an EU ban was no longer relevant and are big snails with a hearty appetite for aquarium plants. In the right aquarium they make an interesting addition and are happy to scavenge uneaten fish food as well as eating their greens.
