Domesticated into a dazzling array of colours, livebearers are amongst the most popular aquarium fish and include such familiar species as the Guppy (Poecilia reticulata). Named for their strategy of giving birth to fully formed fry rather than laying more vulnerable eggs, the enchanting sight of miniature baby fish is a regular spectacle in most aquaria housing them. Male livebearers tend to be particularly keen to pass on their genes and are best outnumbered by females in order to divide their attention.
As females give birth on a regular cycle once mated (even in the absence of a male) bachelor groups might be the best choice for pet keepers not wishing to breed them.
