Catfish have an amazing sense of smell/taste and are covered in tastebuds, especially at the whiskers. This enables them to forage and feed in total darkness or murky water, which often means that they can munch on bite-sized tankmates in the dead of night. As a general guide, cats with forward facing mouths are more predatory than those with underslung mouths but sometimes these predatory habits are handy when looking for a chemical-free solution to nuisance snails etc.
Although they can appear shy and cryptic in our stock tanks, many catfish display bold characters and lots of personality when settled into a home aquarium. Their range of sizes and lifestyles makes them suitable for a wide range of set ups and some are ideal for mixing with stroppy cichlids or peaceful shoaling midwater tetras or barbs.
