This air-breathing group of fishes contains such aquarium favourites as the gouramis, Bettas and snakeheads, as well as the Paradise fish (Macropodus opercularis) that was possibly first imported into the country as early as 1665 (The Diary of Samuel Pepys) and definitely by 1869 (Pierre Carbonnier).
These old favourites have much to offer but can be feisty with each other and thrive in well-planted aquaria that offer the characteristics found in their ancestral swampland native habitat.
